Manuscript Evaluation

As professor of literature and an experienced editor of poetry and prose, I offer manuscript evaluation for poets and writers of fiction (short stories, short story collections, novels and novellas) and non-fiction.

The poetry service covers chapbook or full-length manuscript assessment, and includes a discussion of arc, motif, structure, and ordering of poems.

The fiction examination incorporates a thorough appraisal of character, conflict, dialogue, plot, and resolution, as well as ordering of stories, if applicable.

The non-fiction review addresses the fundamentals relative to the genre (CNF, criticism, how-to, memoir) in which it is written, and may incorporate an analysis of audience, purpose and marketability.

The standard manuscript evaluation does not include a full line edit of the manuscript, which may be arranged at an additional cost.

Base fee: $1.00 per page, $35.00 minimum. Deposit paid in advance.

Potential clients should submit the first thirty-five pages of the manuscript (10-12 pages of poetry) for consideration. Acceptance of contract will be determined within two weeks of receipt of written query.
